Reading #1

Bears and people are alike in many ways. Bears and humans leave similar tracks in the snow. Bears can stand up on two legs. Bears are smart. Bears and people eat many of the same kinds of food. The skeleton of a bear looks a lot like the skeleton of a human. Some hunters refuse to kill bears because they are too much like people. 

Some humans might be a little jealous of bears. When the weather starts to get cold and food becomes scarce, the bear just finds a cozy place and sleeps for about six months. Before this hibernation, a bear eats and eats until it puts on about 100 pounds of fat. While sleeping all winter, the bear uses up the fat. Female bears even give birth to their cubs during their winter sleep. To people in cold climates, this seems like a great way to spend the winter.

Reading #2
It begins about dusk with a quiet roar within the cave. Then several bats start circling near the entrance. Gradually, more and more bats exit the cave until thousands and thousands pour out in a dense cloud. The show continues for over an hour as several million bats leave their daytime haunt and go out on their nightly hunt for flying insects. 

Many people find bats frightening and even despicable, but this evening exodus attracts hundreds of people every summer. They come to watch the spectacle of one of the largest gatherings of warm-blooded creatures on the planet. Occasionally, they also see bats taken by snakes lying in wait near the cave entrance or by hawks diving to snatch them in mid-air.
